CAGN: Animation Pic n Mix

China Animation & Game Network (CAGN) returned on Thursday 2nd June for Animation Pic n Mix, an evening of insight, inspiration and the tastiest local animation.  Shanghai’s animation and game community united at AKQA to witness a diverse selection of the most captivating animated work being created in and around Shanghai.  As always, the event was a great opportunity for to catch up, meet new friends and network.  We’d like to thank everyone who made it along – we had a great night.  Here are some of the highlights.  Looking forward to seeing you next time.

Presenters 

Eric Cruz
Executive Creative Director, AKQA Shanghai

Eric Cruz is a multi-award winning creative leader, designer and educator with over 18 years of industry experience. He is a ‘hybrid creative’ – fusing design, film, moving media, music, art and technology to bring a unique perspective to advertising in the connected age.  Eric has held various leadership positions in agencies across Asia, Europe and the US, and is now serving as AKQA Shanghai’s ECD where he is leading the Greater China team.  

Eric showed animated projects from his time in Asia, including some of AKQA Shanghai’s recent work for Nike and TEDx.


Shen Jie

Animation Filmmaker

Shen Jie came into the spotlight when his dreamy strobe-effect film ”RUN!” became one of the first Chinese shorts to be featured on Motiongrapher.com.  The Shanghai artist has since been a worldwide festival mainstay and is regarded as one of the leadings lights in Chinese independent animation.

Shen Jie presented his latest film ’MONKEY’ for its debut Shanghai screening. The short has been selected for festivals worldwide, including Zagreb 2016 and HAFF 2016.

Dan Sarto

Dan Sarto is co-founder and publisher of Animation World Network (AWN.com), the largest and longest running source for animation news and information resources on the internet.  Dan has recently launched AVGChannel, a Chinese language online community portal, aiming to provide Chinese readers with an inspiring and entertaining collection of animation, visual effects and games information.

Dan recounted some of his experiences from 20 years running AWN, discussed the challenges associated with launching a platform in China, and offered advice for Chinese studios looking to go global.

Angie Fang

Media artist & designer

Angie Fang is a multi-disciplined media artist and designer working in digital media, audiovisual performance and interactive installations. After working as a digital designer in Shanghai, she relocated to London to study MFA Computational Studio Art, during which time she worked with cutting edge studios Studio XO, United Visual Artists and Marshmallow Laser Feast.

Angie presented a selection of her work, which broadly seeks to represent pseudo-natural, material sensory environments, with characteristics of the computational and digital at its heart.

Jerry Verhoeven

Co-founder / Design /Tech / Tools, Grinning Pickle

Jerry and compadre Ben Kerslake are Grinning Pickle, the embryonic indie development team born out of restless frustration with large, sprawling development teams and a healthy addiction to game jams.

Jerry discussed Grinning Pickle’s recent exploration of glitch art – the art of generating broken data with the purpose of creating beauty. In creating their current game, Totem Teller, Jerry and Ben asked themselves how to present a broken story and how that could reflect throughout the whole game experience – in the world, the characters, the music and in the art and graphics.

Fanqiao Wang

Illustrator

Fanqiao is a freelance illustrator and creator of ‘Seal and Friends’, a comic strip with a WeChat following of over 30,000 fans.  Such is the popularity of Seal and Friends that major brands have begun working with her to appear in posts.  Previously she worked as an illustrator in Italy, returning to Shanghai in 2015.

Fanqiao introduced Seal and Friends and discussed the commercial opportunities for an IP creator and self-publisher in China.

Lili Song

Multimedia Creator, Founder of ArtVendor

Lili is focused on new media in the internet environment – including video, animation, installation, gadget, growth hacker – as well as crossover collaboration.

Lili engaged CAGN Pic n Mix attendees in her live interactive GIF Project.
